What a feast for both the tummy and the heart last night. My darling next door neighbour, YASMIN VIRANI, launched her TPARK Entertainment production company by presenting her one-woman show UMRAO YASMIN, at Dancemakers Theatre, Toronto, and thanks to her culinary talented mum, the audience enjoyed a scrumptious dinner prior to the show. Yummmmm
I was fortunate to sit with three friends of Yasmin’s who turned out to be very active in the local Ismaili community so I can’t wait to connect them with my client, author Mike Velshi. Talk about small world! Thank you for sharing your dinner table and warm conversations, Azmina “Boss Lady” Kamani, Begum Walji and Salimah Maherali (pictured below l to r)
Yasmin’s performance was outstanding…I can’t remember the last time I saw a show where Gandhi and Lady Gaga were mentioned in the same breath!! Yasmin is a writer, actor, director and producer (whew!) and she owned that stage last night. Her biographical play took us through her growing up, experiencing love (sort of), losing love then finding it again within herself. She talks about her family, her travels and career and there was not one word that didn’t ring true to my own experiences. We laughed, we nodded agreement and familiarity, and some of us struggled to hold back a tear or two.
After the show ended with a round of rousing applause, we adjourned to the dining hall and celebrated with a lovely cake where Yasmin thanked her mum and friends for their support, then we all indulged in chocolate cake and congratulations to the woman of the hour.
Bravo, Miss Yasmin….this was a one-woman tour de force and I hope you’ll present Umrao Yasmin again and invite ALL of Toronto into your wonderful, funny and passionate life.
