Toronto, Tues. January 6th: Dan Gordon, owner and chef of WHISKY & SPICE, shared some of his secrets to cooking with mustard with Rogers Daytime Toronto host, Val Cole who gave Dan a hand in the kitchen.  The show will air on channel 10 in Toronto on Wednesday Jan. 7th at 10am, 3pm, then again at midnight so you can catch it 3 times – Dan’s recipes are on the Rogers show website as well as on Dan’s site: http://www.whiskyandspice.ca

First up on the show was awesome dentist, Dr. Jim Hyland (below) who has launched http://www.GumGuardians.com  Dr. Jim sat with me in the green room before he went on, and taught me how proper gum care and correct teeth brushing can not only prevent receding gums but can actually heal existing gum issues.  Brilliant! I recommend you check out his website.

20150106_124527Then Cliff the “Orkin Man(below) told us all about pest control, in particular rats and mice. Val was enthralled with the various new mouse/rat traps Cliff brought in to the studio.

20150106_130014Then it was time for Dan….for a first-time on TV, he did great. He talked about Whisky & Spice, what inspired him to launch the premium artisan mustard business, what goes into making the mustards and where viewers can find the complete line of products – online, at McEwan Fine Foods at the Shops at Don Mills (just 10 minutes from the Rogers studios in North York) as well as the upcoming Leslieville Flea on Sunday Jan. 18th at The Distillery District (see details at end of this story).

20150106_114220(0)And finally, back to Dan for plating! Val joined Dan in the kitchen studio as he showed her how to serve up the beef tenderloin, encrusted with mustard, then the mashed potatoes also with mustard, then drizzled mustard vinaigrette dressing on the fresh garden salad….the studio smelled delicious and the crew were licking their lips in anticipation of the feast they were about to enjoy.  He served up a plate to the lovely make-up lady as well as fellow guest Elizabeth Baugh before the crew charged the counter-top!

Celtic spirit comes alive & kilts are a-flying @ Beach Celtic Festival, Toronto


Day One of the annual Beach Celtic Festival is done-and-dusted, and oh what a highland fling was flung! Lots of vendors selling and sampling everything from food to jewellery to clothing to home accessories…even wee Scots sock monkeys!!

Founded 11 years ago by my friend, Sandy Graham (below), who ran Route 66, Toronto’s hottest 50’s dance club back in the late 70’s, early 80’s while I ran Ollie’s, the 2nd best such club located in the Ports of Call multi-venue entertainment centre which was located at Yonge & Summerhill.

Sandy picSandy, a first generation Scottish Canadian, has been presenting Toronto’s only outdoor ceilidh at Kew Gardens in Toronto as a tribute to her late mother.  When her Mum was dying, she asked not be mourned but to be celebrated and thanks to her daughter’s dedication and persistence, the event has grown into what is now a local tradition, celebrating  the Scottish, Irish and Welsh diaspora who came to Canada to start a new life.

Meghan Bold, founder of the Bold Steps Dance Studio, has choreographed many of the dances presented at the Festival, and has been supporting Sandy with fundraisers and promotional performances leading up to this weekend’s event.

Anyone who reads my blog regularly knows I’m a glutton for bling so when I saw the lovely designs of Fric & Frac Jewelry & Beads who set up their tent next to Whisky & Spice, I started oo’ing and aah’ing, drawing a crowd of shoppers. Look at these very affordable lovelies….

Congratulations to Sandy on another fun-filled, family-friendly FREE festival in the heart of Toronto’s Beach neighbourhood! On Sunday, Sandy will be joined by knights (and maybe a princess, too) from the Medieval Times castle, and even more activities and entertainment.

Toronto’s “WHISKY and SPICE” offers handcrafted flavoured gourmet mustards in time for BBQ season!

At a recent food artisans’ market at the Williams-Sonoma store on Bloor Street W in Toronto, I recently discovered a delicious range of handcrafted gourmet mustards courtesy of WHISKY and SPICE, a local specialty food company owned and operated by DAN GORDON (pictured below).

Now anyone who knows me, knows that I’m one hot mama – I love my curries and chillis, but my experience with mustards has been mostly confined to my favourite Keen’s Hot English Mustard (a must with English breakfast bangers, pictured below), the fancy-schmancy Grey Poupon (only consumed in the back of Rolls-Royces, I believe) and the various neon yellow supermarket brands, so when I tasted the three W&S mustards which incorporate beer, wine or whisky…well, I heard angels singing, bells ringing. I was in hottie heaven!

WHISKY and SPICE makes an “honest product”: 40% beer and wine by volume in the Porter Pepper Mustard and Riesling Apple Mustard, and  20% scotch whisky by volume in the Whisky Honey Mustard – Scotch is a much stronger flavour, 40% alcohol by volume, so it needs to be 20% and tempered with honey as the second ingredient. On the ingredients list, I noticed that beer and wine is the second ingredient after mustard seed for the Porter Pepper Mustard and Riesling Apple Mustard and that whisky is the third ingredient after mustard seed and honey for the Whisky Honey Mustard. I was told that if consumers check other beer, wine, whisky and even grocery store honey mustards, they will notice those ingredients listed towards the very end of the ingredients list.

Dan explained “I recently picked up a jar of beer mustard in a leading gourmet kitchen store to check the ingredients list. They were charging $11 for the 250ml. jar and beer was the second last ingredient.  I also checked a popular grocery store brand of honey mustard and in that, too, honey was the second last ingredient. But with Whisky & Spice, those ingredients are prominent, added second only to the mustard seed. That’s what separates Whisky & Spice from other mustards. I ask that people pay more but just like fine wines, craft beers or premium whiskies, they are getting their money’s worth in ingredients from an “honest product”.  Whisky & Spice also takes the time to source the finest spices. Dan uses 100% Canadian mustard seed, the finest quality in the world (did you know that Canada accounts for almost 90% of the world’s mustard exports?), favoured by the fancy French mustard makers who craft all imported Dijon mustards.

“I use the finest quality Indian Malabar black pepper and Jamaican allspice,” Dan continues. “Indian black pepper is renowned for its floral notes and deep flavours compared to black pepper grown in other regions like Vietnam. Other countries in central American produce good allspice but Jamaica is the home of allspice and is the only nation that measures the oil content of its allspice crop to ensure consistency, quality and maximum flavour. The W&S ingredients aren’t selected just so we can charge more – they are selected because they make a difference and bring more flavour.” Whisky & Spice selects only the finest quality spirits, wine, craft beers and spices because they bring greater flavour and that’s what the company is all about.  Flavour is joy. Flavour is satisfaction. Flavour is life.

You can taste the quality yourself at next Sunday’s LESLIEVILLE FLEA (June 15th) located during summer months at the Ashbridge Estate, 1444 Queen Street East, just across from the TTC yards (where the streetcars go to sleep each night!).
